This was her seventh foaling so everything should have gone smoothly, but it didn’t. Her owner, Belinda Nairn, said that everything that could have gone wrong with Vienna did.

Cayot

Dr. Adam Cayot, DVM, has received the wonderful honor of being elected to the board of the Florida Association of Equine Practitioners.

FAEP is the equine centric branch of the Florida Veterinary Medical Association. Being on the council for FAEP is important to Cayot because there are not many members on FVMA’s council with equine medicine as their primary area of practice. He believes the voice of the equine practitioner has been lost and looks forward to being able to bring back a “voice to the table.”

Featured Patient: Montbrook, In Memoriam.

On Friday April 12th 2013, Ocala, and the entire thoroughbred racing world, lost a legend. At the age of 23, Montbrook, was humanely euthanized at his home, Ocala Stud. After much consideration, due to his declining health issues, it was decided that this was in the best interest for the legendary stallion.

Although his contributions to the racing world will be sorely missed, it is impossible not to reflect upon what an incredible life Montbrook led.

Enteroliths in Horses

Enteroliths in Horses

Often referred to as "pearls" or "gut rocks," enteroliths are a phenomeon in horses, that can cause colic. When horses ingest a particle that it can't fully digest, the horse's body forms an enterolith in an attempt to protect itself. Particles that cause enteroliths can be anything from string to pebbles. However, recently, Dr. Hughes encountered a case where a horse had a horse shoe nail embedded in an enterolith. She took the time to explain the case and enteroliths in general, in this month's vet notes.
