September 12, 2022 – Ocala, Fla. – Peterson Smith Equine Hospital + Complete Care is excited to welcome Marcos Perez, LV, MSc, DACVS-LA, and Andrew Smith, DVM, PhD, DACVS-LA, CVMMP to our team of esteemed veterinarians. With more than twenty-five veterinarians spanning five departments, Peterson Smith is equipped to manage all aspects of equine medicine from single patient management to large farm consultations, as well as 24/7 emergency care.
Dr. Marcos Perez has a strong background in equine medicine, obtaining his veterinary degree from the School of Veterinary Medicine of Complutense University in Madrid, Spain, then completing a 1.5-year equine internship at the School of Veterinary Medicine of Complutense University along with a master’s degree in Veterinary Research. Dr. Perez completed an equine surgery internship at Milton Equine Hospital in Ontario, Canada in 2013, then at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington, Kentucky in 2015. From there, Dr. Perez worked as an equine surgery resident at University of California, Davis from 2015-2018. He became a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2019 and continued at University of California, Davis as an equine surgeon after the completion of his residency. Dr. Perez has now joined Peterson Smith as an associate surgeon.
Dr. Andrew Smith had a passion for horses from an early age and started riding cutting horses when he was a teenager. Dr. Smith graduated from North Carolina State University’s School of Veterinary Medicine in 2009 and stayed on to do a one-year rotating internship in equine medicine and surgery. He then completed two internships before starting his residency at the University of Florida, which he completed in 2014. During his residency, Dr. Smith worked on a grant studying the effects of gene therapy on osteoarthritis. He completed a PhD at the University of Florida and was subsequently hired there as a clinical faculty member. In 2017, he became a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. He also became a certified veterinary medical manipulation practitioner in 2019. Dr. Smith worked at Woodside Equine Clinic in Virginia for 2 years and has made his way back to Florida to join the Peterson Smith team as an associate surgeon.
